Kerri’s story: breaking the cycle of addiction and homelessness

This Christmas, we’re celebrating residents whose lives have been transformed thanks to the generosity of supporters like you. Kerri’s struggle to regain control of her life shows what can happen when someone is given a safe and supportive environment in which to heal.

When Kerri first arrived at O’Hanlon House (our Oxford hostel), she was at her lowest point. Years of drug use had cost her everything she held dear, and her daughter had been placed in the care of her maternal grandmother.

Struggles, setbacks and steady support

Life at O’Hanlon House wasn’t easy for Kerri. She struggled with managing money, keeping appointments, and controlling her emotions. Some days she would lash out at staff over minor frustrations. Other times, the weight of her circumstances would overwhelm her, and she’d withdraw completely into herself.

The chaos in her mind was often reflected in her living space, which she filled with possessions she couldn’t let go of. But our staff never gave up on her. With patience and kindness, they slowly earned Kerri’s trust. Day after day, they walked alongside her, waking her for appointments at the probation service, the hospital, and the dentist. They helped her clean her room. They listened.

Kerri had setbacks – conflicts with other residents, and relapses in her drug use. There were times when it seemed she might never break free from the cycle of homelessness and addiction, but our doors remained open.

A new home and hope for the future

Then, last year, everything began to change. After months of waiting, Kerri was offered her own flat through a service we partner with called Beam. We helped her apply for grants to furnish it, securing everything she needed to make it a proper home. When we took her to view the property, she was terrified at the thought of living independently. But with reassurance and the promise of ongoing support, her fear eased.

Earlier this year, Kerri collected her keys and moved into her own home for the first time in years. Recently, she stopped by O’Hanlon House to say hello. She was smiling, looking well, and excited about her future.
